Large Dent Removal — a real before and after from Mike's Bethlehem shopBeforeAfter
Large Dent Removal · the quick answers

Everything you’d ask Mike, answered.

  • Can PDR even fix it?
    Often, yes

There’s no upper size limit — the limit is depth and paint. If the metal’s stretched past memory, that’s the one time it can’t.

    More detail +Less −
Mike has done cars with 200+ dents. As long as the paint isn’t cracked and the panel isn’t bent past metal-memory, paintless works.
  • What if it can’t?
You hear it on the spot

Stretched or bent-past-memory metal is body-shop work. Mike tells you free and refers you to a shop he trusts.

  • How much?
    From $300

Bigger dents run $300–$700+ by size, depth, and panel. Written quote first — no surprises.

  • Will it look factory?
    If it’s PDR-able, yes

No filler, no repaint. The honest no if it isn’t.

  • How fast?
    Same-week

Scheduled in advance; a big single dent can take most of a day. Written quote within 24–48 hours.

Where PDR stops

How big is too big? It’s not the size — it’s the metal.

Paintless repair walks dented metal back to where it wants to sit. The question is never how big the dent is — it’s whether the metal still remembers its shape. Mike reads that off your photo, then proves it with a glue-tab pull before he quotes a dollar.

  1. Comes back paintless

A smooth dent, paint intact, the metal still holding its shape.

Tree branch, sports ball, runaway cart, backed into a post.

  2. Mike pull-tests it first

A sharp crease, right on an edge or body line, or a deep multi-panel hit.

A glue-tab pull on the spot tells him — some soften to factory, some don’t.

  3. Body-shop territory

Paint cracked, metal torn, or stretched past its memory.

PDR can’t hold that fix — Mike refers you to a shop he trusts, free.

Can paintless dent repair fix really big dents?

Yes — far bigger than most people think. We've recovered tree-branch hits, sports impacts, runaway-shopping-cart strikes, and parking-lot collisions that body shops quoted as full panel replacements. The two limits: (1) cracked paint — once the surface fails, you need a body shop. (2) metal bent past memory — if the panel is folded, not just dimpled, PDR can't pull it back. Send a photo and we'll tell you on the spot.

How much does large dent repair cost?

$350–800+ quoted per dent, depending on size, depth, and panel material. A softball-sized hood dent on steel: $350–500. A larger crease or deep impact on aluminum: $500–800. Insurance can cover collision-cause dents and falling-object damage (tree branches qualify under comprehensive) — you file the claim, the carrier pays you minus your deductible, Mike writes the estimate. Quoted in writing before we start — no estimate-that-grows.

How long does large dent repair take?

4 hours to 1 day at the Bethlehem shop. Larger jobs may need a second day if the metal needs to relax between rounds. Drop off in the morning, most cars drive home the next afternoon. Body shops typically quote 1–3 weeks for the same dent because they're repainting; PDR has no paint to dry.

PDR vs body shop for a large dent — which one?

PDR if: paint is intact, no metal tear, no structural damage. Saves 30–50% versus body shop, preserves factory finish, no CarFax flag. Body shop if: paint is cracked, panel is bent past memory, frame or structure is involved. We don't do collision repair — but we tell you the truth about which path your dent needs, no upsell either direction.

Can a tree branch dent be covered by insurance?

Yes — under your comprehensive (not collision) coverage. Tree branches falling are 'falling object' incidents, same insurance category as hail. Comprehensive claims do not raise rates the way at-fault claims do. You file the claim, the carrier pays you minus your deductible, Mike writes the estimate and does the work — your out-of-pocket is just the deductible.

Will the large dent repair leave a CarFax record?

No. Paintless dent repair leaves no panel-replacement record, no body-filler record, no paint-shop record. It's a service repair, not a body claim. Body shops, by contrast, generate CarFax entries that depreciate the vehicle's resale value. Zero panels replaced, ever — that's the metric Mike holds himself to.

Has Mike actually fixed a panel a body shop quoted as a replace?

Yes — routinely. Tree-branch, hail, and parking-lot dents that a dealer body shop quotes as a panel replacement are often a paintless repair instead — no paint, no filler, factory finish kept, usually for a fraction of the replacement quote. If a dent can't be fully restored with PDR, Mike tells you on the spot rather than half-fix it. Real before/afters are in the gallery.

Is PDR better than a body-shop panel replacement for a large dent?

Almost always, when the paint is intact. Body-shop panel replacement runs $2,500–$5,000+ and creates a CarFax body-work record that knocks $500–$2,000 off resale. PDR runs $300–$800, preserves factory paint, leaves no record, and finishes in 4 hours to 1 day. Mike picks PDR over panel-replace whenever the metal can come back to memory — which is most of the time.

How much does large dent repair cost on aluminum vs steel?

Steel-bodied large dents typically run $300–$600. Aluminum panels (BMW hoods, Audi Q5/Q7, Tesla, F-150 since 2015) bill at roughly 1.4× — typically $420–$840 — because the workflow shifts to glue-pull and each pull has to be smaller and slower to avoid creasing the aluminum. Insurance carriers pay the aluminum surcharge as part of the claim; if you're paying out-of-pocket, Mike will quote it in writing before any work starts.

Does PDR or repaint preserve resale value better on a large dent?

PDR by a wide margin. A repainted panel shows up on a CarFax record (body shop entry) and is detectable by any decent buyer's blacklight check — color match on a single repainted panel is almost never perfect under different lighting. Trade-in tools deduct $500–$2,000 per repainted panel. PDR leaves zero record because there's no paint work — the factory finish stays, the resale value stays.
